Why is it called a Whiskey Sour?

A good name will tell you everything you need to know (a perfect example being Jack Daniel’s), and in the case of a Whiskey Sour this also rings true.

A cocktail made up of very few ingredients, the few that are added are there to add a subtle but complimentary sourness or sharpness to the Whiskey, with the optional egg white added to add a richer, creamier texture and froth too.

Like a lot of cocktail names, the origin story is murky, but the common consensus is that the name and the cocktail itself probably date back to when sailors would take spirits on long voyages due to their ability to be stored at room temperature. The addition of lemon or lime was used to help with scurvy and provide some much needed Vitamin C, while at sea.

What's the best whiskey to use in a Whiskey Sour?

With very few ingredients, the whiskey you use in a Whiskey Sour can make or break it. Ideally choose a smoother whiskey with less cut-through, to balance the flavour with only a dash of lemon and bitters. Our personal favourite and recommendation would be Gentleman Jack, with the mellower vanilla and caramel, working perfectly with a dash of bitterness.
