Before the Civil War, distilleries were not required to register with the federal government. But in 1866, Congress passed legislation that required registration. Mr. Jack, being the forward-thinking man he was, made sure he was first in line, and that’s why the Jack Daniel Distillery is still listed in the federal record books as “Distillery No. 1.” This 1L decanter, released in 1990, celebrates the 125th Anniversary of “America’s Oldest Registered Distillery” and pays tribute to its founder.

Can you imagine Old No. 7 in anything but that familiar square bottle? Well, it actually took quite a bit of convincing to get Mr. Jack to consider putting his whiskey in a bottle at all and even longer to get him to pick a bottle. When a local glass salesman finally showed Mr. Jack a square bottle, Jack remarked, “A square bottle for a square shooter.” That was in 1895, and Old No. 7 has been in a square bottle ever since. This 1L replica, released in 1992, commemorates that first Jack Daniel’s bottle.

In 1904, Jack Daniel surprised the entire world (with the exception of the folks from Tennessee, of course) by winning the Gold Medal for best whiskey in the competition at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. To commemorate this honor, Mr. Jack commissioned a special commemorative decanter. This half-gallon reproduction of the commemorative decanter, released in 1971, was the first Jack Daniel’s commemorative bottle to be made available to the general public.

It had been 27 years since the Jack Daniel Distillery entered a Gold Medal competition, and much had happened with the Distillery during that time. Within two years of winning the 1954 Star of Excellence in Brussels, Belgium, Jack Daniel’s had experienced a 100-percent sales increase as well as a change in ownership. Lem Motlow’s four sons sold the Distillery to the Brown-Forman Corporation in 1956. By the end of the 1970s, Jack Daniel’s volume was increasing tenfold. Despite all these changes, however, there was nothing different about our commitment to making our whiskey. We thought it was important to demonstrate that commitment by entering the Brussels-based Selection Institut Pour Les Selections De La Qualité in 1981. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was awarded the competition’s top medal, the “Grand Gold Medal with Palm Leaves.” The seventh bottle in our Gold Medal series celebrates our 1981 Gold Medal.

In 1904, at the urging of family and friends, Jack Daniel took some of his whiskey to the World’s Fair whiskey competition in St. Louis, Missouri. Not many of the big distillers gave Mr. Jack much of a chance, but when it was over, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was declared the finest whiskey in the world and was awarded the Gold Medal. This 750ml bottle, released in 1996, was the first in a series honoring each Gold Medal won by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

Jack Daniel was a Master Distiller who knew the secret of making fine sipping whiskey. He was also a small-town gentleman who knew the secret of making good friends.In 1904, Jack Daniel befriended Mr. M. Hoctor of Great Britain at the St. Louis World’s fair. The Englishman insisted the world would welcome the distinctive taste of Mr. Jack’s charcoal-mellowed whiskey. He encouraged Mr. Jack to send the very first of his whiskey to Europe, where, in 1905, it was awarded the Gold Medal in Liege, Belgium.Second in the Gold Medal series, this 750ml bottle, released in 1997, celebrates Jack Daniel’s 1905 Gold Medal. When Mr. Jack died in 1911, some feared the distinctive character of his Tennessee Whiskey would pass into history with him. But in 1913, a panel of international tasters in Ghent, Belgium awarded Jack Daniel’s another Gold Medal of excellence, signalling to the world that the old-time character of Jack Daniel’s would remain unchanged from generation to generation. This 750ml bottle, released in 1998, commemorates the third Gold Medal won by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. A 1L version of the 1913 Gold Medal bottle was produced for international markets.

Even as Prohibition was sweeping the United States, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was still winning awards. In 1914, Lem Motlow, Jack Daniel’s nephew, took Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey to London, England. Even though the Jack Daniel Distillery was no longer producing whiskey, Lem was quick to ship across the sea a batch he had on hand, and the whiskey from Tennessee again took top honors in the Anglo-American Exposition. This 750ml bottle, released in 2001, is the fourth of the Gold Medal series.

PROHIBITION DOESN’T PREVENT ANOTHER GOLD MEDAL

Tennessee was well under Prohibition by 1915 and it was becoming increasingly obvious it would eventually spread to the whole country. Despite what looked like a dim future, Lem Motlow (Mr. Jack’s nephew) still believed in the whiskey and the Distillery he had inherited from his uncle. In a whiskey competition held in London that year, Jack Daniel’s once again won top honors. The fifth Gold Medal won by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is commemorated by this 750ml bottle, released in 2002.

DESPITE LOOMING PROHIBITION LEM MOTLOW PUSHES FORWARD

If there is anything as unique as the Jack Daniel’s 1954 Gold Medal commemorative bottle, it’s the story of how the Distillery came to acquire this special Gold Medal. Roger Motlow, one of Lem’s sons, received a letter about a whiskey judging contest in Brussels, Belgium. He handed the letter to Herb Fanning, his right hand man, and told him to take care of it. And indeed Mr. Herb did! He walked right out to the production line, pulled the first three bottles, and sent them on their way. According to Mr. Herb, when the folks in the advertising department found out he had pulled whiskey for the competition off the bottling line, they were a bit upset and asked why he hadn’t looked for some special whiskey for the judging. To this Mr. Herb exclaimed: “Why all Jack Daniel’s is special!” The folks in Brussels seemed to agree. Jack Daniel’s was awarded its sixth Gold Medal, the 1954 Star of Excellence.

On October 1, 1953 Angelo Lucchesi started talking about Jack Daniel’s. Fortunately for us, he never stopped until his passing in 2013, at the age of 92. Angelo was much more than Jack Daniel’s first salesman, he was a friend. He made telling the story of Jack Daniel’s whiskey his passion and pleasure. Decades later most everyone in the world knows Jack Daniel’s. In honor of Angelo’s dedication and ambassadorship, the Jack Daniel Distillery was proud to commemorate Angelo Lucchesi’s 90th birthday in 2010, with a special bottling of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7. We thank him for his friendship and the many friends he’s made for Jack. A portion of the proceeds from this limited edition bottle went directly to one of Angelo’s favorite charities.

Barrelhouse 1 is one of the oldest warehouses at the Distillery. Built as one of the first post-Prohibition warehouses and located on a hill overlooking the Distillery grounds, its seven-story design was found to be the ideal elevation for aging of whiskey. This 750ml bottle, released in 1994, commemorates the heritage of Barrelhouse 1. And due to changes in Tennessee law, it was the first bottle of Jack Daniel’s to be legally sold at the Distillery (and in Lynchburg) since 1909. The Barrelhouse 1 bottle was originally sold in a specially designed wooden box.

A New Post-Prohibition Era Is Launched

Before 1871, the areas comprising Lynchburg and portions of Moore County, Tennessee were part of a larger county called Lincoln. The “Belle of Lincoln” was one of the earliest names under which Jack Daniel sold his whiskey. While Mr. Jack remained a lifelong bachelor, he did have a few women in his life that could have been the “Belle.” After his death, dozens of bereaved women claimed to be the “Belle.” But who he named his whiskey after is another mystery that Jack took with him to the grave. While none of the original “Belle” decanters are known to exist, this 1.75L reproduction, released in 1979, is based on surviving descriptions. A 1.5L version was also produced for international markets.

In 1907, Jack Daniel traveled to Nashville to hear President Theodore Roosevelt speak. Mr. Jack was so taken with Roosevelt’s speech that when he returned to Lynchburg, he drew up plans to make a special bottle to send to Roosevelt’s next inauguration. Unfortunately for Mr. Jack, Roosevelt chose not to run again in 1908, and plans for the bottle were scrapped. That is, until 1984, the 80th anniversary of Roosevelt’s first formal inauguration, when this 1.75L decanter was released. A 1.5L version was also produced for international markets.

HERE'S TO COLORFUL BEGINNINGSJack Daniel’s is known for being a well-crafted, smooth sippin’ Tennessee Whiskey. You don’t last for over 150 years if you’re not a quality product, after all. We’ve become known for something else along the way too: our iconic black and white label. But what people may not know is that the history of our label wasn’t always so black and white.Some time before 1904 our bottles were a rather unexpected shade of green with an eye-catching gold trim. And as unusual as that may seem, it’s just one of the many labels in Old No. 7’s past. You have to be patient to make whiskey, and it seems that Jack took his time landing on the tried-and-true black label we know today. This is the first in our series of Legacy Edition Bottles. Each label we release will celebrate the unique, slightly mysterious history of Old No. 7.

The Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee was famous for more than just its coffee. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey was the exclusive whiskey served by this grand hotel. Lem Motlow, Jack Daniel’s nephew, designed this special bottle for the hotel’s famous Oak Bar. The half-gallon reproduction of this bottle was made available in 1971, and a 1.5L version was produced for international markets in 1995.

While Prohibition was lifted nationally in 1933, it took five more years for the Jack Daniel Distillery to re-open its doors - because the state of Tennessee didn’t end the ban on alcohol production until 1938. REPEAL OF NATIONAL PROHIBITIONProhibition in the United States officially ended on December 5, 1933, when Utah approved the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, becoming the last state needed for a three quarters majority to enact the provision.Even though it took another five years for Tennessee to end the ban on alcohol production, we still had plenty of reason to celebrate the National Repeal. If not for the National Repeal back in 1933, Mr. Jack’s Distillery wouldn’t be up and running today. This 750ml bottle celebrates the first step toward reopening the Jack Daniel Distillery.

In Mr. Jack’s day, the Cumberland River was a major thoroughfare for riverboats hauling cotton, tobacco and passengers, with Nashville being a major port-of-call. Keeping these boats amply supplied with Jack Daniel’s was the way to introduce travelers to the whiskey from Tennessee. And, the key to having a boat stock your product was to make friends with the captain. This 1.75L bottle, released in 1987, pays honor to the grand old river boats and the captains who commanded them.

When Jack Daniel opened The White Rabbit and Red Dog saloons in Lynchburg in 1892, he thought of a novel way to attract people to the town square. Mr. Jack formed The Silver Cornet Band with musically inclined locals - a bank clerk, grocer, policeman, and even a local lawyer. Like his whiskey, music brought folks together from every walk of life. Mr. Jack’s band played together for another 20 years. Even when the Distillery was closed due to Prohibition, the band kept Jack’s spirit alive. To honor Mr. Jack’s connection to music, which continues today, this 1.75L bottle was released in 1986.

TENNESSEE’S 200TH ANNIVERSARY In 1896, Mr. Jack commissioned a special “Centennial Bottle” in honor of Tennessee’s 100th anniversary of becoming the 16th state. Because of the bottle’s long, twisting neck, it was difficult to make and only a few were manufactured and given by Mr. Jack to his friends. An updated 750ml replica, released in 1995 in anticipation of the 1996 anniversary, was created to celebrate Tennessee’s 200th birthday. A 700ml version was also produced for international markets.

Since the 1904 World’s Fair introduced Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey to the world, it only seemed right that the Distillery commemorate the occasion of a World’s Fair held in Mr. Jack’s home state. This 1.75L bottle, released in 1982, honored both the 1982 World’s Fair held in Knoxville, Tennessee and Mr. Jack’s affection for the land and friendly people of the “Volunteer State.” Folks who registered a Tribute to Tennessee bottle with the Distillery originally received an engraved nameplate instead of a registration certificate. Unfortunately, these nameplates are no longer available.

This special edition honors Mr. Jack’s opening of the White Rabbit Saloon formerly located in Lynchburg’s town square. The saloon was a favorite Lynchburg gathering place where he and his friends could spend time together and enjoy a glass of Mr. Jack's fine Tennessee sipping whiskey.
