Mystery Behind "Old No. 7"
Mystery Behind "Old No. 7"
This is, by far, the question we get most from our friends, and the truth is no one knows for sure. That being said, there are a few theories:
Maybe Jack felt like good fortune had looked kindly upon him when he finally landed on the whiskey he would call Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7. And since many consider ‘seven’ a lucky number, he decided to name his whiskey in its honor.
Others hold that the No. 7 has something to do with a batch or recipe. Jack was constantly working to perfect his whiskey, but once he landed on something good, he stuck with it. Some feel Mr. Jack finally found the taste he was looking for in his seventh batch or recipe and called it “Old No. 7.”
Another story that many swear by was that the railroad lost one of Jack’s shipments of whiskey. When the barrels were finally found, the word “Old” was written on the shipping ticket that happened to be “No. 7.” The shopkeeper who eventually received the whiskey liked it so much, he ordered some more of that “Old No.7.”
The truth is . . . There are so many stories because no one knows the real answer. Maybe that’s all Mr. Jack was looking for. A reason for folks to talk - knowing nothing goes better with good whiskey than good conversation. Perhaps, Jack wanted to give us something to talk about. Well, it worked. More than 150 years later, folks are still talking.
