It's Not Bourbon. It's Jack.
It's Not Bourbon. It's Jack.
A lot of people ask us if Jack is a Bourbon or a whiskey. It’s even common for many restaurants and bars to call Jack a Bourbon. But the truth is that we’re a Tennessee Whiskey. It even says so right on our label.
It’s confusing, right? Let’s dive in. Jack Daniel’s meets all the standards to be called a Bourbon whiskey; and then, it does it one better!
By law (yep, it’s a thing), a Bourbon must be made in America. No problem there, our whiskey certainly qualifies. Jack Daniel’s is made in Tennessee, USA at America’s oldest registered distillery, and has been for more than 150 years..
A Bourbon’s grain bill must be at least 51% corn. You can check that requirement off the list too. And a Bourbon must be distilled at no more than 160 proof, or 80% alcohol by volume. Jack Daniel’s is well under that. It comes over the still at 140 proof, or 70% alcohol.
Bourbon must also enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof, or 62.5% alcohol by volume. Jack does that as well. But there’s more.
We mature our whiskey in the required new, charred American white oak barrels. There is no artificial coloring or flavoring in Jack Daniel’s.
